“Kuiper Belt Missions Could Reveal the Solar System’s Origins” from scientific America on the 14 of October 2014
In order to
understand this we first need to know what the kuiper belt is. The Kuiper belt is a region surrounding our
solar system made of ice and rocks; it is believed to be the origin of comets
of orbital periods of less than 200 years.
This note
talks about a satellite called Rosetta its mission was to land on a comet and
drill in order to know what it was made of. As the satellite is flying side by
side with the comet. In order to do as planned it needed to “wake up” because it
was set to turn on by an alarm which was started 2 years ago. Before the
initialization there were a couple of blank faces thinking it would never come
to life just like the mars observer, this was mentioned by holger sierks an
astronomer in Germany.
It has already
landed and I’m intrigued to know what it will tell us about the origin of life
and our solar system.
